Livin' Off the Land

Happy New Year's Eve!

As mentioned in my previous post, 2010 resolutions are on my mind. Specifically, I'm trying to find a way to cut our spending in the month of January. The way I'm planning to do this is to avoid grocery purchases. Money Saving Mom is a great inspiration for this! I have set the following rules in our house for January food purchases:
  1. We're eating all of the food that we've stockpiled in the year and a half that we've lived in our house. I've got a couple turkeys in the freezer that will help with this.
  2. Eating out puts a huge dent in our budget. It's nice to do this as a family, but I'm learning that the more time we spend at home, the happier we are. I don't think it's safe to say that we won't go out at all this month, but we'll be limiting it for sure. My rule is that we're not allowed to eat out more than once per pay period, which means twice this month.
  3. Here's the big one: We're allowed to spend only $10 per week on grocery runs. This includes milk, bread, produce, etc. that we may need.

I see many meals of beans in our future, especially toward the end of the month. I don't know how Jason feels about this (he's kind of a meat and potatoes kind of guy), but he says he's on board. I'll have to find some recipes that make him happy.

Tomorrow is the day that this begins. I think this weekend will be the most difficult, since we're used to jumping in the car for easy meals.

2010 Goals

Everyone is talking about resolutions. It's time to start committing to some myself. Here's the list I've come up with so far:

  1. Pay off 55% of our credit card debt by July 1.

  2. Put two aprons on the etsy site by Jan 15.

  3. Inspired by Money Saving Mom, I'm going to try to limit the number of groceries that we buy in January. More to come on that, including our rules.

  4. Develop an organizational system for our toy room.

That's a good start. We'll see how it goes.

A Good Place to Start

I have a problem. Mostly, I have too many ideas in my head, and I never write them down. My web favorites list gets longer and longer with projects that I'd like to try, recipes that look good, and chores that I need to be held accountable for. I'd also like a place to share my wares....and maybe peddle a few.
